TOTE-BAG & T-SHIRT DESIGN

DESIGN CONTEST

SCREENPRINT, TYPOGRAPHY, ILLUSTRATION

The AIGA Student Group at SDSU Spring 2023 screenprinting event had a design contest. I was grateful that my design was one of the three chosen. Students were able to submit their tote-bag and t-shirt designs, and the board selected 3 designs. Members were able to screenprint the design of their choice during the event.

PROCESS

I was inspired by 2000 video game characters and I wanted my bag to have that same feeling. I started by sketching a few versions of a seated character on a laptop to reference the designers in the AIGA student group. I made a rough sketch of how I wanted the rest of the elements to layout as well.

HAND WRITTEN ELEMENTS

I wanted the lines to have an organic ink feeling, so I hand wrote the year “2023” and the name “SDSU” with a black marker. After that, I vectorized it and brought it into the design.

TYPE SYSTEM

I chose an bold organic looking serif typeface to enhance the ink illustrations. I wanted to make sure the Student group information did not clash with the main elements, so I chose a classic sans seif typeface.

FINAL DESIGN

The final version depicts a friendly looking character, on a laptop with his cursor hovering over the name “AIGA”. The handwritten grafitti adds to the y2k streetwear feeling of the design. I was grateful that many of the students at the screenprinting event chose my design to print on to the bags.
